Case Study - DeWo 2004

De Wo 2004Since 1991 the Design Workshop has seen 11 editions and 8 different hosting companies. The showing of previous editions of the Design Workshop and their relative achievements is the best way to understand how successful this event can be for the hosting company.

In 2004, for example, the Design Workshop was hosted by BAE Systems together with the University of Manchester and supported by other secondary sponsors. The objective of the Workshop was to perform the “Preliminary Design of a Search and Rescue UAV” for a new (fictitious) country joining the European Union. A complete set of technical specifications for the UAV as well as a geographical, economic and military profile of the country were given.

For three weeks, 25 students worked in three separate groups to design the complete UAV system, i.e. including specification of the airframe and engine, airborne sensor and avionics pack, the basic components of the ground station as well as production and maintenance costs. At the end of the three week tender process, an industrial review panel assessed each submission and the team with the best design was chosen.

The achieved results where considered oustanding! High motivation and the thinking “out of the box”, together with a professional environment, made possible complete in three weeks the preliminary design of a SAR UAV with capabilities much higher than the required ones.
